This place has been killing other Roast Beef Sandwiches' hopes and dreams ever since I was a kid. I have family in Monroe, and when we would go visit them, we would hug, kiss, unpack, and immediately head to Ray's.

it was hot inside and the table i sat at was sticky:( had the chicken fried steak but it looked like a frozen patty that was heated and brown gravy on poured on top. the mashed potatoes appeared to be instant potatoes. the only thing i enjoyed was the fried okra, they appeared fresh because they are in season now.

My family and I decided to stop at this Hole-in-the-Wall looking place while passing through West Monroe. While approaching the red-cinder block building, I gained high hopes derived from the promising smell of fry grease. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by the depressing sight of sticky tables and dirty floors. We continued to the register where we were greeted by a worker who seemed nice enough, but she was talking to herself. Upon further inspection, she was talking on the phone through an earbud in her ear. And continued to talk throughout the rest of our visit. We all ordered their signature dish, the Po-Boy. They offered multiple kinds of Po-Boys, but we all got the roast beef variety. We ordered to go, and ordered cups of ice to fill with our own drinks on the road. But while waiting for our food we discovered that our ice had bits of some mysterious dirt-like flakes embedded in the ice cubes. And the worker (who was still on the phone) disregarded our comments about it. After several attempts to obtain clean ice, we decided to drink our sodas hot. When our food arrived, after a 15-20 minute wait, we left. We unpacked our food in the car to find our Po-Boys cold. The roast beef's flavor, or lack thereof, was bland and boring. The tomatoes, and lettuce on the sandwich weren't fresh and were rather unsatisfactory. The curly fries we ordered, as well, tasted as if they were fried in grease months old. They only thing that the meal had going for it was the brown gravy that came with our sandwich. It was the best thing about the meal. But sadly everything else was so flavorless that we had to douse our sandwich in the gravy. Definitely not worth the $8 for a sandwich. In conclusion, this dingy little restaurant was dirty and depressing. The one worker we encounter was talking on the phone. The food was disappointing and flavorless. The fry grease, while it smelled appealing from the outside, was old and disgusting. The gravy, while good, wasn't enough to save this struggling, overpriced meal.

Oh god, yes yes yes yes yes. Yes to everything. Cheap, piping hot po boys - I split a shrimp one - with the best fries ever. I could drink the gravy with a ladle and be ok with myself when I'm done. The decor is plain and unassuming. Just come here for the food.

Came in from Chicago and must say this is an amazing Po-boy! As a Yankee, I never understood the appeal of a breaded shrimp covered with bread...and this was the sandwich that changed my mind. I get it now. Order the shrimp Po-Boy and you won't be disappointed...great!

Roast beef sandwich is really good. Usually only thing I'll get to eat here. Almost like a good brisket flavor. Great fries that appear to be cut in house. Have that natural look. Gravy is outstanding. Does have multiple locations.

Great food, but the place needs to be cleaned. I would eat there more if it was cleaner.

Nice, nice burgers. Fries are really good too. I love places like this. Easy to find just off I-20. Kids loved the grilled cheese and ice cream. Old school burger joint greatness.

I slogged my way through the rain from Jackson to Dallas today, and while I thought I'd stop for a po-boy somewhere on my way through Louisiana, the Yelp reviews for the main Ray's Pege location made it seem like there'd be lines, long waits, and a lack of seating. I don't know if those claims are true, but I didn't want to have to deal with the possibility, what with me needing to get on with my trip, so I decided to try this secondary location less than five minutes off I-20. There were no lines and ample seating, despite the fact that this location was doing good business. Place your order and pay at the counter, grab a drink, and claim a table. My roast beef po-boy (a whole one, but halves are available, too), with homemade fries, gravy, and a Coke -- all told, a little over $9 -- were brought out to me in no time at all. I'll admit, I raised an eyebrow when I first received my food. Two thin slices of roast beef on each half? That can't possibly be enough, can it? But I chowed down, and it was so delicious and filling that all was forgotten. Fantastic gravy fries, too.

Listen, I'm from Portland, OR... the Hipster capital of the USA, foodie central, where the waitstaff have reputations for being annoyed by you and their job. Where, as Portlandia put it (I hate that show by the way), young people come to retire (only clever & true thing they've said!). Let me just say, I LOVED RAY'S PEGE!!! I've never been to the south and Ray's didn't disappoint. The staff were friendly and the food... My gosh people! It was so good I had them pack it up for the flight home so my husband could enjoy. The staff was more than accommodating when I said I was taking the food across the country. Be happy you have this place! It's NOT expensive compared to the prices I'm used to. The portions are generous and everyone was more than patient & friendly. We ate here twice we liked it so much- roast beef one day, rib eye the next. Although I enjoyed both, the roast beef was better. We visited the first part of November when it was warm & sunny while we enjoyed our meal outside and as I sit here in the tundra-like conditions that have hit our city, oh how I wish I were back there. Wonder if they FedEx??
